Once upon a time, Cornelius Grass was one of the most powerful sorcerers in the Convention. Thanks to his wisdom, the Convention was so powerful that even Emperor Dietrich II considered the sorcerers’ opinions and often consulted the Council of Three when making decisions important to the empire’s future.
For many years, Cornelius led the Council of Three; he and two other sorcerers addressed issues relating to the Convention, purchased rare books for the Magical Library and… kept an ancient secret which none but they were meant to know. This secret was passed down from generation to generation. Whenever a sorcerer left the Council of Three and another came to replace him, the old members of the Council passed the secret on to the newcomer. The newly initiated member received a special artifact—a fragment of a mechanical key that he was bound to always carry with him.
Aside from the Convention, there was one more force to be reckoned with in the Empire. Since the very first steam engine was invented and the first paddle wheelers began to ply their trade on the rivers, so has existed the so-called Guild of Workshops. The Guild’s leader was a great genius who had once studied magic, which meant that all the artifacts he crafted were endowed with magical properties. One day he invented something truly incredible. It was a wooden box that concealed under its lid a small living world, complete with continents and oceans. The genius called his creation a “Spellbox” and made a great many such boxes throughout his long life. One who owned such a toy could reshape the box’s small world to his liking, exchange armies and towns with friends, and buy and sell especially rare and valuable creatures. But the Spellboxes hid something else, something none of their masters knew of…
And then one alarming day, a sorceress of the Council of Three discovered that the chest she kept the artifact in had been broken. In a rush, she ran to check the other artifact. Fortunately, it was where it should be, but Cornelius sensed that something was wrong… The only fragment the old magician was fully certain of was his own. While rummaging through some old books, one of the initiates discovered a spell capable of teleporting a sorcerer into a Spellbox; he was able to convince Cornelius that the answer to what was happening lay there—in one of the Spellboxes.
Reluctantly, Cornelius agreed to perform the ritual…
